Brisbane’s public transport & NDIS: your guide to getting around with confidence

Jun.24.2026 NDIS News

Getting around Brisbane can be tricky or overwhelming, especially for people with a disability. If you or someone you support is an NDIS participant, understanding what transport supports are available and how to access them in your city can help you stay connected, confident, and independent.

This guide walks you through how NDIS transport funding works, and explores accessible ways to travel for appointments, social events, and everyday errands in Brisbane.

Understanding NDIS transport funding

If your disability makes it difficult for you to use public transport, you may be eligible for support from the NDIS. NDIS transport funding for participants is designed to help cover everyday transport costs directly related to your disability. It’s important to remember that not everyone with a NDIS plan will be eligible for transport funding, and it depends on your individual needs and goals. Generally, the NDIS only provides funding where there are additional costs directly related to your disability. In most cases, they won’t fund everyday transport costs that people without disability would pay.

If you’re eligible, transport funding will appear in your plan within Core Supports or as ‘Recurring Transport Support’ within your Recurring Supports budget (PACE plans only). Recurring transport support covers ongoing transport costs like getting to and from work, school or community activities. This funding is paid by the NDIA to you on a regular schedule without needing you to submit individual claims each time. Transport is usually a ‘stated’ support which means funding is rigid and cannot be used flexibly across other Core Supports or budgets, and vice versa.

Levels of Transport Support

If transport funding is included in your plan, it’s usually provided at one of three levels.  The level included in your plan will depend on your circumstances and how transport helps you take part in work, study or community activities. If you’re unsure which level applies to you, your Plan Manager, Support Coordinator or NDIS contact can help guide you.

  • Level 1: Up to $1,784 per year

If you aren’t working, studying or going to day programs, but want to get more involved in your community

  • Level 2: Up to $2,676 per year

If you are working or studying part-time, or both, up to 15 hours a week, going to day programs, or participating in social, recreational or leisure activities

  • Level 3: Up to $3,456 per year

If you are working, looking for work, or studying at least 15 hours a week, and unable to use public transport

In special situations, extra funding may be available to support employment goals.

Understanding your transport funding level can help you plan how to use it in line with your NDIS plan.

Accessible public transport options in Brisbane

Accessible public transport options in Brisbane

Brisbane has made great progress in offering accessible public transport. Translink runs the city’s buses, trains, ferries, and trams, and many of their services are now more inclusive and easier to use for people with disabilities.

Accessibility Features

Many Translink services include accessibility features such as:

  • Low-floor buses for easier boarding with mobility aids
  • Wheelchair-accessible train stations with lifts and ramps
  • Tactile ground indicators to support visually impaired travellers
  • Audio-visual announcements with live updates on services

You can also find handy tools on the Translink website like accessibility maps and trip planners. These help you feel more prepared and confident before heading out.

Companion Card Scheme

The Queensland Government’s Companion Card lets a support person travel for free with the cardholder on public transport. It’s a great way for people who need attendant support to participate in community activities at no extra cost.

Note: Eligibility is separate from the NDIS, so you’ll need to apply through the Queensland Government.

Community Transport Services in Brisbane

If public transport isn’t quite right for your needs, there are great community transport options. Depending on your plan, these types of services may be funded if transport support is included and aligns with your goals. Your plan will outline what you can use your funding for, so it’s important to check or ask if you’re unsure.

TransitCare

TransitCare is a not-for-profit organisation that offers door-to-door transport for eligible clients in Brisbane South and surrounding areas. Whether it’s for a medical appointment, a shopping trip, or a social visit, they help make travel easier and more reliable.

Tips for Using Transport Services

A little planning goes a long way when it comes to travel:

  • Check your routes, accessibility, and times in advance
  • Let your provider know if you need help boarding or using mobility aids
  • Talk to your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to ensure your transport fits your goals and budget

Having a routine, using apps or keeping notes can also help build familiarity with new routes or services.

FAQs: Your questions, answered
Can I move money between categories?

You can move funds within Flexible Core Supports categories depending on your needs, such as shifting from transport to daily personal care. However, you cannot move money between Core, Capacity Building and Capital Supports. These are separate budgets with different rules.

What happens if I don’t use all of my funds?

NDIS funds expire at the end of your plan and do not roll over. It’s important to use your budget in line with your goals. Plan Managers and Support Coordinators can help you track and make the most of your funding.

What does a Plan Manager do?

A Plan Manager like MyIntegra pays your providers, tracks your spending and sends you regular reports. You get more flexibility and less admin, including the ability to use unregistered providers.

Do I need Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is helpful if you have complex needs, multiple supports or are new to the NDIS. It helps you understand your plan, link with providers and build skills to manage your supports independently.

What if I’m not sure what something is covered under?

Your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator can guide you. They’ll help you check whether a support is a NDIS funded support and which budget it fits under. This ensures your spending stays compliant and effective.
