Can I access NDIS funding for dyslexia?

Mar.18.2025 By Cameron Allen MyIntegra Updates

If you or someone you know is living with dyslexia, you might be wondering if you are eligible to access NDIS funding. The NDIS provides funding for people with permanent and significant disabilities that impact their daily functioning. However, dyslexia alone is not considered a disability that is eligible for NDIS support. Let’s take a closer look at what this means.

Is dyslexia covered by NDIS funding?

Understanding the eligibility criteria for NDIS funding is crucial. There are 4 key disability requirements NDIS participants must meet to be eligible for funding:

  •     A disability caused by an impairment
  •     Your impairment is likely to be permanent
  •     Your impairment reduces your functional capacity to move, communicate, learn or undertake self-care
  •     Your impairment affects your participation in work, study or social activities

You’ll also need to meet age and residency criteria which requires you to be aged between 7 and 65, and an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Since dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty rather than a recognised disability under NDIS guidelines, a diagnosis of dyslexia alone does not qualify for funding.

However, individuals with dyslexia who also have other conditions – such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or an intellectual disability – may be eligible for NDIS funding.

If you’re unsure about your eligibility, you can call the NDIS and connect to a local area coordinator (LAC) for guidance. You can also learn more in our blog: Who is eligible for the NDIS?

If you are eligible your NDIS LAC will help you complete an Access Request Form.

Types of support you might be able to access

Although the NDIS does not specifically fund supports for dyslexia, individuals with co-existing disabilities may be able to access certain services through their NDIS plan. These supports are designed to improve functional capacity and enable participation in everyday activities.

NDIS funding is allocated under different budget categories, and all supports must be deemed reasonable and necessary to help the participant achieve their goals. Learn more about these supports and the items they cover in our blog: Understanding the types of NDIS funding & how they can be used.
