The NDIS has introduced important changes to Supported Independent Living (SIL), which means that all providers delivering SIL Supports will need to be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission).
This change is to help make sure that the supports a participant receives are safe and of high quality, especially those at the highest risk of poor outcomes. The changes are also designed to ensure that the NDIS is getting value for the services provided.
What is Supported independent living (SIL)?
SIL is a package of home and living supports, supporting a person with higher support needs to live independently. It can include household chores, help with personal care, overnight support or accessing the community.
A SIL package is where:
- Support is provided for most, or all, of the day.
- The provider manages and delivers all the supports included in the arrangement.
- The support helps the person with daily life tasks.
Not all home and living supports are included. Supports that are short-term, only for a few hours per day or week, or fully self-managed by the participant are not SIL supports.
What is changing?
From 1st July 2026 SIL providers who want to continue providing SIL supports to NDIS Participants must start the process of becoming a registered provider with the NDIS Commission. Providers have until 1st October 2026 to apply for registration.
To support this change, new supported independent living Practice Standards have been introduced which must be met by providers from 1st July 2026.
What does this mean for Participants?
Participants do not need to do anything right now.
For participants using SIL supports we recommend finding out if your provider is registered, or if they plan to apply for registration by the 1st October 2026. You can check your providers registration on the NDIS Commission website.
If your provider is registered or plans to register, you don’t need to do anything.
If your provider does not register, you will need to move to a registered provider to continue receiving SIL supports from 1st October 2026. You can use the NDIS provider finder tool to search for a new provider.
A participants SIL funding should not be impacted by this change.
What does this mean for SIL Providers?
If you are a provider offering SIL supports, you must be registered with the NDIS Commission to continue providing services.
If you are not yet registered, we recommend you look to get registered as soon as possible.
If you are registered, you should make sure you understand the new supported independent living Practice Standards to stay registered. You do not need to do anything else for the transition.
For more information about the transition please visit the NDIS Commission website.
