Can You Access Speech Pathology Through the NDIS? Here’s What You Need to Know

Oct.29.2025 Plan Management

If you or someone close to you has a disability affecting speech, language, or swallowing, you may be wondering if you can use National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding to access speech pathology services.

Speech pathology can be an essential support for individuals of all ages, helping to improve quality of life, independence, and social connection.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about speech pathology under the NDIS, from eligibility requirements and how to request funding to be included in your plan, to finding the right provider and maximising your funding for the best possible outcomes.

What is the role of speech pathology in disability support?

Speech pathology services play a critical role in helping individuals communicate more effectively, whether by improving speech, understanding language, or using alternative, non-verbal communication methods.

Speech pathologists work with people of all ages and abilities with communication and swallowing challenges. They can assess, diagnose, and treat a range of issues with specialised interventions to improve communication skills and ultimately enhance quality of life.

Is speech pathology covered by the NDIS?

Under the NDIS, speech pathology is considered a support that can help you achieve personal goals, such as enhancing social participation, improving literacy skills, and developing greater independence. Funding typically falls under the Capacity Building Supports category, Improved Daily Living Skills.

The NDIS may cover speech pathology if it’s deemed reasonable and necessary to help you achieve the specific goals that align with your NDIS plan. Here’s a closer look at what this means:

  • Related to your disability: The support must relate directly to your disability. If your communication difficulties are due to your disability, then speech pathology is more likely to be approved.
  • Assisting in achieving plan goals: The support must help you achieve one or more of your plan’s stated goals. These goals might include improving social skills, developing independence, enhancing educational performance, or better engaging with the community.
  •  Not covered by other means: The NDIS will not fund services that fall under other systems, such as healthcare or education. However, if speech pathology is required specifically due to a disability and is not available through healthcare, it may be covered under the NDIS.

If your speech pathology needs meet these criteria, there’s a good chance they can be included in your NDIS plan.

What types of Speech Pathology supports may be funded by the NDIS?

The NDIS can fund a variety of speech pathology services depending on your individual plan and goals. These may include:

Assessments and diagnosis: To help identify and understand your communication needs, including detailed reports to guide therapy and other supports

Speech and language therapy sessions: Tailored one on one or group sessions deigned to improve communication skills including spoken language, non-verbal communication, social skills and literacy.

Assistive devices: The purchase and training for assistive communication devices including speech generation devices or augmentative and alternative communication tools, as well as guidance for setup and ongoing use.

Who is eligible to receive NDIS funding for speech pathology services and how to apply

To request NDIS funding for speech pathology services, you must be an active NDIS participant. If you are not yet a participant, the first step is to check your eligibility and apply.

If you are unsure about your eligibility, you can learn more in our blog: Who is eligible for the NDIS?

If you believe you are eligible, you can contact the NDIS, who will refer you to your nearest NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to discuss your situation and help you complete an access request form to apply for the NDIS.

In your application, you’ll need to provide supporting evidence related to your disability, such as medical reports from your GP or speech pathologist, outlining:

  •         The nature and severity of your condition
  •         How it affects communication and impacts daily life
  •         Why you need assistance with communication or other related challenges.

Once the NDIS have confirmed your eligibility, you’ll have a planning meeting to discuss your needs and goals. This is the time to discuss how services like speech pathology could support you.

What are the steps to include funding for speech pathology in your NDIS plan?

      1. Prepare for your initial planning meeting: During your planning meeting, be prepared to explain why speech pathology is necessary for you to achieve your NDIS goals. Outline specific communication challenges or daily difficulties related to your disability. You are welcome to bring a family member, friend, advocate or anyone else to your meeting to provide support and assist you with communication.

     2. Set clear goals related to communication: Goals are central to your NDIS plan. Consider         setting goals that directly relate to communication improvement, such as enhancing social interactions, becoming more independent, or increasing participation in the community. With clear goals in place, it’s easier to justify the need for speech pathology.

       3.  Provide supporting documentation: Having recommendations from a GP, psychologist, or other specialists who can explain why you need speech pathology will help. Reports from healthcare providers, past speech pathologists, or therapists who have worked with you can also strengthen your case.

      4. Request a plan review if needed: If you already have an NDIS plan but don’t yet have funding for speech pathology, you can request a plan review. This allows you to update your goals and include additional supports, like speech pathology, if they’re essential to achieving your plan outcomes.

How to connect with the right speech pathologist

Once the NDIS approve funding for speech pathology to be included in your plan, the next step is to find the right provider. Here are a few tips for selecting a speech pathologist who aligns with your goals and needs:

  • Look for NDIS registered providers: While you have the option to work with either NDIS registered or non-registered providers, NDIS registered providers have met specific quality and safety standards set by the NDIS. If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you have the flexibility of choosing either NDIS registered or non-registered speech pathologists.
  • Consider experience with your specific needs: Different speech pathologists may specialise in areas such as childhood speech disorders, neurological conditions, or communication devices. Choose someone with experience relevant to your particular communication needs and disability.
  • Seek recommendations and reviews: It’s often helpful to ask for recommendations from others in the NDIS community or consult online reviews to find a speech pathologist with a strong reputation for quality and effective services.
  • Support Coordination: If you have Support Coordination included in your plan you can work with your Support Coordinator to help connect you with providers that are right for you.

If you think speech pathology could help you reach your goals, it’s worth exploring how it can fit into your NDIS plan. Remember, NDIS funding is about empowering you to achieve greater independence and quality of life, so don’t hesitate to advocate for the supports you need.
