On June 30, 2021 the NDIS published their latest quarterly report. The quarterly report is published each quarter and gives us important data on how the NDIS is performing, plus information about the funding and provision of supports to participants.
Let’s break down what we learned about how NDIS participants are managing their plans.
As of the time of publishing the report, there were 466,619 Australians utilising the NDIS.
- 21% of participants fully self-managed their plan.
- 49% of participants use a plan manager like MyIntegra to manage their plan.
- 20% of participants use the NDIA to agency-manage their plan.
To put these numbers in perspective, in 2019, 43% of participants were agency-managed and only 30% were plan managed.
In this blog, we dive into the ins and outs of the three types of plan management, and explore reasons for the trends we are seeing.
The three ways your NDIS plan can be managed are:
- Self-managed – Where you are responsible for paying providers and all the paperwork
- Plan managed – By an NDIS registered plan manager – such as MyIntegra
- Agency managed – Where registered providers directly bill the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)
Or you can choose to use a combination of management types to suit your needs.
The latest numbers
Over the past two years, the proportion of participants who
- self-manage their plan has increased from 27% to 31%
- use a plan manager has increased from 30% to 49%
- have an agency-managed plan has decreased from 42% to 20%

Explained
Self-management
NDIS Participants manage all the financial aspects of their NDIS plan, such as paying providers and keeping records of their services and invoices. They don’t receive any funding to do this.
Why self-management?
- Make decisions in line with your plan goals
- Choose registered and non-registered providers
- Employ your own staff or pay someone to employ others
- Control and full responsibility for your NDIS funds and claiming from the NDIS
Plan management
NDIS Participants enlist a third party, such as MyIntegra, to manage their NDIS funds and paperwork and pay their bills. This option is paid for separately out of the NDIS plan and does not affect any of your other supports.
Why plan management?
- Increased control over how your plan funds are used
- Choose registered and non-registered providers
- Help with paying your NDIS support providers
- Professional budget management, ensuring funds are available for the length of the plan
- Help to navigate the NDIS
Agency management
NDIS Participants get the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to manage their funds.
Why agency managed?
- Ability to check the MyPlace portal to see claims providers are making against your NDIS funds
- Choose from registered providers only
